“Tomorrow. Make sure you’re ready.”

Dieter looked at the Chief Quadrant Corrections Officer Rand with resignation, and Officer Rand didn’t miss the look. “Freeman, it’s the first day jitters. I’ve seen this many times before, but you’ll get used to it. However, you should know that it’s far worse for you if you mess up. I remember having to fire one of you six, seven years ago because he kept messing up. I’m sure you don’t want that, do you?” He looked Dieter in the eye.

“No.” Officer Rand waited for more, but what else could he say?

“Of course not,” Rand finally replied. “Practice makes perfect. Just make sure you practice well before tomorrow. And pretend they’re watching you. It’ll help.”

“What did the person do?” he asked.

“Stupid question. You don’t want to ask that. You never ask that. It get’s to you. Wouldn’t it be messy to find out you’re doing it because…well, for example – because someone stole bread to feed his or her family? No. First rule – never ask. And yes, second rule – don’t mess up. We take pride in our work here.” .....
